Record single-day jump of 26,506 COVID-19 cases in India


India saw yet another record single-day jump of 26,506 COVID-19 cases pushing its tally to 7,93,802 on Friday (July 10), while the death toll climbed to 21,604 with 475 people succumbing to the infection, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country is expected to breach the 8 lakh mark today.

The number of recoveries stands at 4,95,51, while there are 2,76,685 active cases of coronavirus infection presently in the country. “Thus, around 62.42 per cent of patients have recovered so far,” an official said.

A total of 2.83 lakh tests were done on Thursday.

Of the 475 deaths, 219  are from Maharashtra, 65 from Tamil Nadu, 45 from Delhi, 27 from West Bengal, 17 from Uttar Pradesh, 16 from Karnataka, 15 from Gujarat, 13 from Andhra Pradesh.

Maharashtra continues to top the state tally with 2,30,599 cases, as 6,875 new infections were reported on Thursday. As many as 219 patients died in the state, raising the toll to 9,667.

The 4,000 mark was breached in Tamil Nadu after a gap of three days taking the tally to 1,26,581. 65 deaths were reported on Thursday. Though the states daily count of fresh cases soared to 4,231, the downtrend in the fresh infections in the state capital continued with the addition of only 1,216 cases.

Delhi recorded 2,187 fresh coronavirus cases on Thursday taking the tally in the city to over 1.07 lakh, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 3,258.

Agra city will be under strict lockdown for three days beginning Friday evening. The decision to enforce the restrictions strictly came after the Yogi Adityanath government on Thursday announced a three-day lockdown in the state from 10 pm on Friday to 5 am on Monday.

Southern states Kerala and Karnataka too reported the highest single-day spike of 339 and 2,200 respectively. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan cautioned that the state was “very close” to the threat of community spread.
