IUML moves SC challenging Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

A day after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) moved the Supreme Court on Thursday (December 12) challenging the Bill.

The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha completing the legislative process for giving Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

IUML alleged that the Bill violates the fundamental Right to Equality of the Constitution.

The Bill which was cleared in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday saw 125 MPs voting in its favour and 99 against it. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Opposing the bill, the whole northeast was under fire. Guwahati, the epicentre of anti-Citizenship Amendment Bill protests, was put under indefinite curfew and Army was deployed in the city and Assam Rifles personnel were deployed in Tripura on Wednesday (December 11) as the two northeastern states plunged into chaos over the hugely emotive bill.
