India's COVID-19 caseload increases to 7,42,417


With 22,752 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, India’s COVID-19 caseload increased to 7,42,417 on Wednesday (July 8). The death toll climbed to 20,642 with 482 people succumbing to the disease, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The number of recoveries stands at 4,56,830, while there are 2,64,944 active cases of coronavirus infection presently in the country. “Thus, around 61.53 per cent of patients have recovered so far,” an official said. The health ministry said that India’s recovered cases per million population is more than active Covid-19 cases per million and credited the states for early identification and management of the coronavirus cases.

This is the sixth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 20,000.

Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday recorded its highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with 1,332 new infections pushing the states tally to 29,968. So far, 827 fatalities have been reported in the state.

Karnataka too witnessed a spike on Tuesday with 1,498 new COVID-19 cases and 15 fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 26,815 and the death toll to 416. The day also saw 571 patients getting discharged after recovery. Out of the 1,498 new cases, 800 were from Bengaluru urban alone.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra spiked by 5,134 on Tuesday, taking the total count to 2,17,121. With 224 more patients succumbing to the infection, the death toll has gone up to 9,250, the data said.

Tamil Nadu reported 3,616 new cases and 65 fatalities on Tuesday with Chennai accounting for 1,203 cases, reflecting a continuation of drop in new infections. Speaking to reporters in Chennai Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami said that that though the number of cases has come down due to the effective lockdown, they cannot extend it as it has the responsibility to better the livelihood of the people.

Following Tamil Nadu, Delhi too witnessed a drop in the number of new COVID-19 cases as the national capital recorded 2,008 fresh infections on Tuesday taking the total to 1,02,831 cases. The death toll from the disease mounted to 3,165, of which 50 fatalities were on Tuesday alone.
