How to treat coronavirus? Try cow urine, suggests Assam's BJP legislator

Gomutra or cow urine seems to be the go-to panacea for BJP leaders, for any ailments – even cancer, as Sadhvi Pragya Thakur once famously claimed, and now coronavirus.

In one such ‘revelation’, BJP MP from Assam Suman Haripriya, on Monday (March 2) declared in the state assembly that gomutra and gobar (cow dung) can cure coronavirus, an epidemic which has so far claimed more than 3,000 lives globally and continues to spread.

“We all know that cow dung is very helpful. Likewise, when cow urine is sprayed, it purifies and area… I think something similar can be done with gomutra and gobar to cure coronavirus,” she said while speaking during a discussion on cattle smuggling to Bangladesh during the budget session.

Haripriya is not alone in the coterie of politicians who share a common faith in cow urine. In April 23, 2019, Pragya Thakur, BJP’s MP from Bhopal, also a cancer survivor claimed that it was indeed cow dung and urine that cured her breast cancer.

In September last year, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey announced that the ministry is working on using cow urine in formulation of medicines for the treatment of cancer.

There, however, is no scientific evidence that cow urine can cure cancer, so far.

On Monday, the Union Home Ministry reported two more positive cases of coronavirus – one from Delhi and another from Telangana – taking the total number of confirmed cases to five in the country.

Around 25,738 people are under community surveillance across the country while 37 suspected to have COVID-19 symptoms are currently hospitalised.
