Furore over Rahul Dravid 'agreeing' to attend BJP meet; BCCI says no

Indian cricket fans were in a state of shock and disbelief when a BJP leader claimed that the national team coach Rahul Dravid would attend the BJP Yuva Morcha’s National Working Committee in Dharamsala.

It was Vishal Naheria, the BJP MLA from Dharmshala constituency, who spoke about former India captain Dravid’s attendance at the party event which will be held in the next few days.

He told news agency ANI that Dravid’s participation will be used to send a message to the youth of the country that they can move forward not only in politics but also in other fields.

“The National Working Committee of BJP Yuva Morcha will be held in Dharamsala from May 12 to 15. The national leadership of BJP and the leadership of Himachal Pradesh will be involved. BJP National President JP Nadda, National Organization Minister and Union Minister will also attend the session,” ANI quoted Naheria as saying.

“Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid will also participate in this. Owing to his success, a message will be given among the youth that we can move forward not only in politics but also in other fields,” he added.

As this story appeared, people took to social media to question Dravid, the batting legend who has millions of supporters not only in India but across the globe.

Many took to Twitter to state that they could not believe the news. One of the Twitter users commented that the “wall is breached”. Dravid is popularly known as “The Wall”. Another user wrote, “Unbelievable!! Dravid ???”

“As far as I know, Rahul Dravid stands for everything opposite to what BJP stands for. He also happens to be my biggest sporting icon. Tough pill to swallow,” another Twitter user wrote.

However, there were positive reactions as well. Some say it will be a “gamechanger” in the Karnataka Assembly elections.

Many speculated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently having dinner at BCCI President and Dravid’s former teammate Sourav Ganguly’s house in Kolkata may have led to this.

According to reports, the BCCI has denied the stories.

Later in the day, Dravid clarified that the report is “incorrect”.

“A section of the media has reported that I will attend a meeting in Himachal Pradesh from May 12th-15th, 2022. I wish to clarify that the said report is incorrect,” Dravid told ANI.

Here are some of the reactions from Twitter.
