West Bengal braces for cyclone Fani; Kolkata airport to be shut from 3 pm
Cyclone Fani — billed as the worst April season cyclone in decades — made its landfall at Puri, Odisha around half an hour ago with a wind speed of 185 km-hr. The Army, Navy and the coast guards have been kept on standby. As 14 districts of the state are likely to be affected by the cyclone, more than a million people have been evacuated to safer areas. Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Naygarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar are expected to take major hit by the storm.
To help the affected people, around 5,000 kitchens are being operated to serve people in the shelters. All flights and trains from and to Odisha have been cancelled. Prime Minister Modi received an update on Fani from his senior-most officials, on May 2. After crossing Odisha, cyclone Fani is expected to move towards West Bengal before weakening.
