Petrol price to rise by ₹2.5, diesel by ₹2.3 after FM raises tax
Petrol price will be hiked by over ₹2.5 per litre and diesel by more than ₹2.3 after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Friday raised taxes on the fuels to part-fund her Budget for 2019-20. Sitharaman raised excise duty and road and infrastructure cess on the auto fuels by ₹ 2 per litre each to raise over ₹ 28,000 crore.
Surcharge on super-rich raised to up to 7% over tax in Budget 2019
The Union budget has proposed raising taxes on the super-rich by increasing the surcharge on tax on those earning more than ₹2 crore. Presenting her maiden budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the surcharge on income tax for those earning between ₹2 crore and ₹5 crore has been raised to 3 per cent and for those earning more than ₹5 crore, it has been raised to 7 per cent.
Gold prices zoom ₹590 on custom duty hike
Gold prices on Friday zoomed Rs 590 to Rs 34,800 per 10 gram in the national capital following Budget announcement of an increase in the custom duty on the precious metal to 12.5 per cent from 10 per cent. The government proposed to increase custom duty on gold and other precious metals to 12.5 per cent, a move which would make the yellow metal and jewellery expensive in the domestic market.
National Sports Education Board only new aspect of Sports Budget
Widening the scope of its flagship Khelo India program, the Government on Friday announced the setting up of a National Sports Education Board (NSEB) in the first Budget of its second term but did not change the interim allocations set aside for sports. The allocations from the interim Budget presented by the then Finance Minister Piyush Goyal in February earlier this year were left untouched in the full budget presented by Nirmala Sitharaman here.
Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict Nalini gets 30 days parole
The Madras High Court on Friday (July 5) granted one month parole to S Nalini, one of the convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case to make arrangements for her daughter’s wedding. One of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, S Nalini has been in prison for over 28 years. A couple of months ago, she filed a habeas corpus petition seeking permission to produce her before the court to ask for six months’ leave.
SC convicts 12 persons for killing ex-Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya in 2003
The Supreme Court convicted 12 persons on Friday (July 5) for killing former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya in 2003. A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra allowed the appeals of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Gujarat government challenging the high court order by which the convicts were absolved of murder charges in the case.
Maharashtra MLA remanded to police custody till Jul 9 in assault case
A court in Maharashtra on Friday remanded Congress MLA Nitesh Rane and 17 of his supporters, arrested for attacking a deputy engineer with mud, in police custody till July 9. Rane and the other arrested accused were produced before a court at Kankavli in coastal Sindhudurg district this afternoon and were remanded in police custody till July 9. The assault on the engineer came days after a BJP legislator assaulted an official with a cricket bat in Madhya Pradesh.
