As Sonia Gandhi is all set to complete one year as the interim president of the Indian National Congress on August 10, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is likely to make a decision soon on the extension of her tenure, Hindustan Times reported.

According to the report, Sonia’s tenure will be extended as per the party’s norms as the Congress is yet to elect a president, a party functionary said, adding that the election was obstructed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.

After former Congress president Rahul Gandhi refused to take back his resignation, Sonia was appointed as the interim chief of the party on August 10, 2019. However, due to polls to Maharashtra and Haryana assemblies and then elections in Jharkhand and Delhi, a regular president could not be elected, the functionary said.

Rahul tendered his resignation after the Congress faced a debacle in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The party could win only 52 of the total 543 seats in the Lower House, while the ruling BJP swept the polls with 303 seats.

Rahul had said, in a letter, “I personally fought the Prime Minister, the RSS, and the institutions they have captured with all my being. I fought because I love India. And I fought to defend the ideals India was built upon. At times, I stood completely alone and am extremely proud of it.”

Sonia was first elected as the president of the Congress party on March 14, 1998, and remained in the post until it was taken over by her son Rahul on December 16, 2017.
