CJI Ranjan Gogoi cleared in sexual harassment case
The three-judge in-house committee constituted to probe allegations of sexual harassment against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has cleared the CJI, said a notice put on the Supreme Court’s website. Also, in line with the judgment delivered by the top court in the Indira Jaising case, the findings of the committee will not be made public, the notice further stated. The report of a committee constituted as part of the in-house procedure is not liable to be made public, the notice said. The report has been submitted to the next senior-most judge competent to receive it. The panel has concluded that there is no substance in the allegations levelled by a former employee of the Supreme Court, said the notice.
Centre releases additional ₹1,000 cr to cyclone-hit Odisha
The Home Ministry on Monday (May 6) announced release of an additional ₹1,000 crore to the cyclone-hit Odisha as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A Home Ministry statement said the amount would be in addition to the ₹341 crore that had been provided to the Odishas State Disaster Response Force in advance. As announced by Prime Minister after his aerial survey and review of relief efforts with the Odisha government, the Home Ministry has announced a further release of ₹1,000 crore for assistance to the state, the statement said. The extremely severe cyclone Fani made a landfall in Odisha on May 3 causing extensive damage in the state and claiming at least 34 lives.
Good Samaritan writer tries to save life, gets arrested by police
Koyambedu is the busiest part of Chennai on a typical day. Home to wholesale and retail markets as well as the bus stand, it, however, was deserted on May 5. Traders Day had driven away shopkeepers and shoppers to their homes. At the market, a man sauntered around. He was a regular there. Locals say he didn’t seem to have his wits about him and would roam around. On the late morning of May 5, he fell down at the market. His body seemed to be overcome by seizures and he died on the spot. Another man walked up to him. He was concerned that a life was in distress. Sporting a scraggy beard, his faced filled with fear and sorrow, he sat down next to the body. Someone informed the police who came to the spot. They found a body and a man wearing crumpled clothes and looking “suspicious” standing next to the body. The accused, however, was a writer well known in literary circles.
13 students secure first rank in CBSE exam
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the results for Class 10 examination on Monday (May 6). Thirteen students bagged the first rank with 499 out of 500 marks of which 8 are from Uttar Pradesh. The second rank were shared by 25 students with 498 out of 500 and 59 students share third position with 497 marks in the CBSE examination.
Rave party racket: Revellers go hi-tech to network, hoodwink police
Even as the Coimbatore district police, in Tamil Nadu, continue to dig deeper into the details of the rave party busted in the city on Saturday, preliminary investigative details shed light on the meticulous planning and networking. At least 163 people, comprising 140 Keralites, including a Russian national were arrested for allegedly conducting a rave party in the outskirts of Pollachi in Coimbatore district. Police seized drugs including Ganja, cocaine and hashish oil from the resort. Though Ganja and the other drugs are accessible and can be transported from neighbouring states, police said that it is the first time that about 13.5 grams of MDMA ecstasy tablets have been seized in Coimbatore. It is also the first time that a rave party has been busted in the industrial city. A senior police officer, who did not want to be named, said that a special team found something amiss in the Agri Nest Farm resort located at Sethumadai in Pollachi. Only after watching the movement at the resort for hours, did they realise they were taking drugs.
K’taka students who missed NEET due to train delay will get another chance: Javadekar
Karnataka students who had missed the medical entrance examination NEET due to a train delay will get another chance, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said Monday (May 6). The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for these students will be conducted on May 20, he said. “Happy to announce that Karnataka students who missed NEET exam due to railway delay will get another chance,” Javadekar tweeted.
Lankan officials discover training centre used by suicide bombers prior to Easter attacks
Sri Lankan authorities on Monday (May 6) discovered a facility believed to be used as a training centre by the suicide bombers prior to the terror attacks on churches and luxury hotels on the Easter Sunday that killed more than 250 people. Nine suicide bombers carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three churches and three luxury hotels on the Easter Sunday. The Islamic State claimed the attacks, but the government blamed local Islamist extremist group National Thawheed Jammath (NTJ). The two-storey building was discovered in the Blackpool area in Nuwara Eliya. Details of this facility had surfaced during questioning of some suspects who were arrested in connection with the NTJ in Sainthamaruthu, Kalmunai, the Times Online reported.
