Award-winning fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, 59, dies in Goa
Renowned fashion designer Wendell Rodricks died at his residence in Colvale village in Goa on Wednesday (February 12).
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mapusa, Gajanan Prabhudesai confirmed the death of Rodricks, who was 59. Prabhudesai said Rodricks died after collapsing at his residence in North Goa.
A Padma Shri awardee, Rodricks was also an author, environmentalist and gay rights activist.
Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane tweeted, “deeply saddened to hear about the sudden demise of my very good friend and designer, Wendell Rodricks. His excellency in his work and skills are irreplaceable and shall always be cherished. We will truly miss him. My heartfelt condolences to his family and dear ones.”
Rodricks was ailing for some time and was focussing on his museum and writing books after handing over his design label to his protege Schulen Fernandes a few years ago.
He had come out in support of gay rights as early as in 2000 and was vocal on many issues including environment protection.
