Based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the Zoonimar area of the city, security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the morning, a police official told PTI.
He said as the forces were conducting searches in the area, militants fired upon them. The forces retaliated, leading to a gunfight.
A report in ANI said that security forces had even dialled up the parents of the militants who in turn had cajoled them to surrender, but in vain.
“Through our sources, we got to know of their identity and called their parents who appealed to them to surrender. But they didn’t relent,” ANI quoted Kashmir’s Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar as saying.
