Triple Talaq bill passed in Lok Sabha
Presenting the controversial triple talaq bill in Lok Sabha on Thursday, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the law will provide Muslim women the prestige they deserve and ensure gender parity.
While the ruling dispensation called it a move to bring about gender justice, the opposition slammed the bill as “anti-men” and a bill that sought to demonise the Muslim man.
As expected, the bill apart from the Congress was opposed by JD (U), YSRCP, DMK, Trinamool Congress and AIMM among others. The BJD while welcoming the bill, opposed it in its current form.
The JD(U) also staged a walk out in opposition to the bill.
The debate was interrupted midway when Samajwadi Party’s MP Azam Khan made an indigent remark at deputy speaker Rama Devi by telling her that “you are so adorable that I can’t take my eyes off you” when she asked him to address looking at the chair. BJP MPs created a furore over the issue and demanded Khan’s apology for his unparliamentary comment.
The ruling BJP had issued a whip to all its members to be present in the House.
The Modi government, during its first term, had the bill cleared in the Lok Sabha but couldn’t secure passage in the Rajya Sabha. Therefore, the bill lapsed. It is being brought up again for a second time.
