Ready to sit till midnight, says Speaker as CM keeps resignation ready
With the rebel MLAs rejecting the offer of the JD(S) to give up the chief ministership on the eve of the trust vote, the stage is set for a showdown between the BJP and the Congress-JD(S) coalition.
With the both the ruling and opposition benches taking opposing stands on the timing of the trust vote, the Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar made it clear that it will be held today.
Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah said the Speaker will take a call on the timing of the trust vote.
BJP leader and former chief minister Jagdish Shettar summoned rebel MLAs tomorrow to enable him to make up their mind on resignations.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea from two independent rebel MLAs seeking a direction to chief minister Kumaraswamy to complete the floor test by 5 pm.
Congress leader DK Shivakumar said that the JD(S)’s HD Kumaraswamy is willing to give up the chief ministership for the sake the coalition’s survival. But that offer too has been rejected by the rebel MLAs.
Also, both the Congress and Chief Minister Kumaraswamy have moved the Supreme Court over two different matters. While the Congress has sought clarification over the top court’s interim order that the party whips will not be binding on rebel MLAs, Kumaraswamy has approached the Supreme Court over the Governor’s direction to conduct the trust vote.
Meanwhile, BSP supremo Mayawati has directed the lone party MLA Mahesh to vote in favour of the coalition. Will he fall in line is the big question as he has already declared his opposition to the Congress-JD(S) combine. Even if he were to defy his party leader, he can’t be disqualified as he is the only member of the party in the Assembly.
