Rajya Sabha polls: YSRCP wins all 4 seats in Andhra Pradesh

The ruling YSR Congress bagged all the four Rajya Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh in the biennial election held on Friday (June 19), as was expected.

According to Legislature sources, Deputy Chief Minister Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, Minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana, industrialist Parimal Nathwani, and realtor Ayodhya Rami Reddy of the YSRC were elected with 38 votes each.

The opposition Telugu Desam Party, which had forced the contest despite not having numbers, lost badly, with its nominee Varla Ramaiah polling only 17 votes against its technical strength of 23 in the Assembly.

Elections to 19 seats in the Rajya Sabha were held on Friday across eight states.

The polls were initially scheduled for March 26, but had to be deferred due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Of the total 24 seats for the Rajya Sabha, five candidates — four in Karnataka and one in Arunachal Pradesh — were elected unopposed.

Results for the remaining 19 seats in eight states — Andhra Pradesh (4), Gujarat (4), Jharkhand (2), Madhya Pradesh (3), Manipur (1), Meghalaya (1), Mizoram (1) and Rajasthan (3) are coming in.

In the 230-member Assembly in Madhya Pradesh, the BJP currently has 107 MLAs and also enjoys the support of two legislators of the Bahujan Samaj Party, one of the Samajwadi Party and two Independents, while the opposition Congress has 92 MLAs. Currently, the effective strength of the House is 206, as 24 seats were lying vacant.

On March 22, Congress MLAs resigned from their posts in Madhya Pradesh, following which the Kamal Nath-led state government collapsed. This necessitated by-elections for these 22 seats — most of which were dominated by Dalit community members — and two others seats which fell vacant due to the demise of their sitting legislators.
