Modi sets new goal to free country from single use plastic by 2022

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a ₹150 coin at Sabarmati in Gujarat today (October 2) in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, whose 150th birth anniversary is being celebrated across the country.

Modi is set to declare the country open-defecation free as part of the Swachh Bharat campaign Modi launched in 2014. Several events have been planned across the country to celebrate the legacy of father of the nation.

When he came to power in 2014, Modi had reminded people of Gandhiji’s efforts to ensure cleanliness in the country and had launched the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission to make India open-defecation free.

Key to this mission was providing toilets and sanitation facilities for all households and his government has been able to achieve 98 per cent efficiency from 38.7 per cent in five years.

Earlier, in the day, Modi and a host of leaders across party lines paid their tributes to Gandhiji at his final resting place Rajghat in New Delhi.

“Tributes to beloved Bapu! On #Gandhi150, we express gratitude to Mahatma Gandhi for his everlasting contribution to humanity. We pledge to continue working hard to realise his dreams and create a better planet,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

In a short video, Modi said Gandhiji’s message of peace is still relevant to the world community.
