Angelina Jolie rushed to bomb shelter during surprise visit to war-hit Ukraine

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, who is the Special Envoy for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, paid a surprise visit to the war-hit Ukraine.

Jolie visited a boarding school and a hospital in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Saturday (April 30), according to Lviv regional governor Maksym Kozytskyy.

The actress had come to speak with displaced people who were taking refuge in Lviv, and also children who were injured in a missile attack on Kramatorsk railway station, Kozytskyy said on Telegram.

“In one of the medical institutions, she has visited children who suffered from a missile strike by the Russian military on the Kramatorsk train station. She was very moved by their stories. One girl was even able to tell Ms. Jolie about her dream privately,” Kozytskyy said.

“The visit was a surprise to us all. Plenty of people who saw Ms. Jolie in the Lviv region could not believe that it was really her. But since Feb. 24, Ukraine has shown the entire world that there are plenty of incredible things here,” he wrote.

At the boarding school, Jolie spoke to students and also posed for pictures. According to Kozytskyy, the actress promised that she would come again. She also met the evacuees arriving at Lviv’s central railway station and also thanked volunteers for providing medical help.

According to several posts on Twitter, Jolie’s trip was interrupted after sirens were sounded and she had to be taken to a bomb shelter. Videos of her being rushed out of a building were shared on social media. Also on Saturday, Jolie was pictured at a coffee shop in Lviv.

After years of dedicated service to UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and the cause of refugees, Jolie was appointed Special Envoy in April 2012.

In March, Jolie visited Yemen to meet displaced families and refugees.

“I’ve landed in Aden, to meet displaced families and refugees for UNHCR @refugees and show my support for the people of Yemen. I will do my best to communicate from the ground as the days unfold.

“As we continue to watch the horrors unfolding in Ukraine, and call for an immediate end to the conflict and humanitarian access, I’m here in Yemen to support people who also desperately need peace,” she wrote on her Instagram page on March 6.
