World Cup: Rohit on fire; breaks records of Tendulkar, Kapil and Gayle

This was Rohit’s seventh hundred in World Cup history, going past Tendulkar’s all-time record of six. In the 2019 edition, Rohit had hit five centuries.

It was a record-breaking night for India captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday (October 11) as he scored a superb century (131 off 84, 16x4, 5x6) against Afghanistan in an ICC World Cup 2023 match in Delhi.

Rohit broke the records of Chris Gayle, Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar during this knock at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

First, Rohit broke the record for most sixes in international cricket. He surpassed Gayle’s 553 sixes record, across formats.

Continuing his attack on Afghanistan’s bowlers, Rohit brought his hundred off just 63 balls, the fastest by an Indian in World Cup history. He eclipsed Kapil Dev’s long-standing record of 100 from 72, against Zimbabwe in 1983.

This was Rohit’s seventh hundred in World Cup history, going past Tendulkar’s all-time record of six. In the 2019 edition, Rohit had hit five centuries.

What is incredible about Rohit’s World Cup centuries feat is that he took just 17 innings to score seven three-figure marks. Tendulkar scored six World Cup hundreds in 44 innings.

In his ODI career, Rohit now has 31 centuries, the third-most in history. The list is headed by Tendulkar with 49 tons followed by Virat Kohli (47). Rohit has now gone past Ricky Ponting (30).

During his knock in Delhi on Wednesday, Rohit also became the joint-fastest to score 1,000 runs in ODI World Cups.
