World Cup 2023: England set ODI record in opener against New Zealand

The first runs of the World Cup came off a six when Bairstow cleared the backward square ropes with a flick off the pads on the second ball of the tournament from Boult.

England batters set a world record in ODIs during their opening game of the ICC World Cup 2023 against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Thursday (October 5).

After being sent into bat first at the Narendra Modi Stadium, England’s all 11 batsmen reached double figures. This is the first time such a record has happened in ODI history.

Number three batter Joe Root was the top scorer for the defending champions with 77. However, their total was a below-par 282/9 in 50 overs.

The feat of all 11 batters in a side reaching double figures has occurred in ODI number 4,658.

Earlier, New Zealand spinners exploited the hot and humid conditions in the afternoon perfectly to be on top against England's free-flowing and aggressive batting approach, producing a collective bowling performance.

With his part-time spin, Glenn Phillips delivered an unexpected but successful spell of 3-0-17-2 accounting for Joe Root (77) and Moeen Ali (11), while Mitchell Santner's 10-0-37-2 and Matt Henry's 10-1-48-3 were the key performances that helped New Zealand keep England well under 300 on a placid surface.

The first runs of the 2023 World Cup came off a six when Jonny Bairstow (33 off 35 balls, 4x4s, 1x6s) cleared the backward square ropes with a flick off the pads on the second ball of the tournament from Trent Boult (1/48).

New Zealand were without their regular captain Kane Williamson and Tom Lathan was the stand-in skipper.
