Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s 20-year-old World Cup records

Kohli continued his prolific run in the ongoing World Cup 2023 as he scored a record 50th ODI ton during the India vs New Zealand semifinal in Mumbai.

Virat Kohli on Wednesday (November 15) broke Sachin Tendulkar’s three records during the India versus New Zealand semifinal encounter in the ICC World Cup 2023.

At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Kohli first went past Tendulkar’s record of most 50-plus scores in a single edition of the World Cup. Kohli on Wednesday scored a fifty for his eight in the current edition of the 50-over showpiece event.

Tendulkar and Shakib Al Hasan held the record for most 50-plus scores in a single World Cup with seven each. Tendulkar achieved the feat in 2003 and Bangladesh’s Shakib in 2019.

As he continued to blossom in the middle, Kohli next eclipsed Tendulkar’s 20-year-old record of most runs at a World Cup. Tendulkar scored 673 runs in the 2003 edition, and Kohli went past that tally in Mumbai. He now has 711 runs in the tournament in 10 matches.

Later, Kohli brought up his 50th ODI ton, to go past Tendulkar. On November 5, Kohli equalled Tendulkar’s world record ODI centuries tally of 49. He has been in great form in the ongoing World Cup.
