Kohli’s 50th ODI ton: Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s world record

Kohli was at ease in the middle. After scoring a record eight 50-plus scores in a single World Cup, India’s No. 3 batter went on to reach his 50th ODI hundred.


Virat Kohli scored his 50th ODI ton to go past Sachin Tendulkar’s world record, during the India versus New Zealand ICC World Cup 2023 semifinal in Mumbai on Wednesday (November 15).

Tendulkar’s ODI centuries tally of 49 was equalled by Kohli on his 35th birthday on November 5, and 10 days later, he went past his idol.

After Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat, Indian batters dominated at the Wankhede Stadium in the semifinal. While Rohit hit a brisk 47, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer hit half-centuries.

Kohli was at ease in the middle. After scoring a record eight 50-plus scores in a single World Cup, India’s No. 3 batter went on to reach his 50th ODI hundred. This was also Kohli’s first century in an ICC knockout game.

In World Cup 2023, Kohli has scored three hundreds and five fifties. He is the leading run-scorer of the tournament and broke Tendulkar’s record.

Tendulkar held the record for most runs in a single World Cup – 673. Kohli has now gone past that.
