
3 TN fishermen die after consuming liquor like liquid
Threefisherman died after they consumed a liquid found in acontainer floating in the sea, mistaking it to be foreignliquor, fisheries department officials said on Sunday.
A 38-year old fishermen died onboard the boat itself,another aged 40 was declared brought dead at a hospital inNagapattinam and a 26-year old man succumbed while undergoingtreatment on Sunday, they said.
They were among a group of six fishermen from theRameswaram region that ventured into the sea from nearbyKodiakarai on March 1.
Their bodies were brought to Rameswaram late on Sundayand buried.
According to the survivors, the fishermen had spottedthe container on Saturday. They opened it and drank theliquor like substance inside. All three fainted some timelater.
Other fishermen in the vessel, who did not consume theliquid, steered the boat to the coast and reached the shore onSunday morning.
Officials of the fisheries department, Coastal SecurityGroup police and other authorities were conductinginvestigations, the sources said.
Rameswaram Fishermen association leader P Sesurajavisited Nagapattinam and made arrangements for bringing backthe bodies of the three.
