Calling the Kerala Assembly election verdict “not the end of the road” for the Left Democratic Front, CPI(M) Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday (May 7) said the outcome also raises concerns about the protection of secularism in Kerala.

Respecting the people’s mandate, Vijayan congratulated the UDF on its victory, even as he described the result as “completely unexpected” for the LDF. He thanked voters for the support extended to the front despite what he termed sustained campaigns and attacks, noting that a significant section of the electorate had remained firmly with the LDF, giving it confidence to move forward.

“This verdict is not an end, but a new beginning for continued political engagement,” he said, adding that the LDF is committed to regaining public trust and advancing with greater strength.

He asserted that the development initiatives and welfare schemes implemented over the past decade had brought tangible changes to society and should be sustained.

‘Will play role of responsible, strong Opposition’

Vijayan said the LDF would play the role of a strong and responsible Opposition, pushing forward its vision for “New Kerala”, including a knowledge economy, youth employment, social justice, and strengthening public health and education. Policies on poverty eradication, women’s empowerment, and social security would be pursued by exerting democratic pressure on the new government, he added.

He said the LDF would support all measures that improve people’s lives, while opposing anti-people decisions.

“Our aim is to function as a responsible Opposition,” he said.

Flags ideological concerns

Flagging ideological concerns, Vijayan said protecting Kerala’s secular and plural fabric remains a core position of the LDF. He described as “serious” the Bharatiya Janata Party winning three seats, adding that certain trends in the election would worry those committed to secularism. He asserted that the LDF would continue its struggle against divisive politics without compromising with communal forces.

The CPI(M) leader also alleged that the election saw widespread misinformation campaigns, with the role of some media requiring scrutiny. He said narratives based on half-truths and exaggerations were not healthy for democracy, but added that the LDF would learn from the experience.

Comprehensive review to be done

Announcing a comprehensive review, Vijayan said the front would hold open, democratic discussions at all levels, taking into account concerns, criticisms, and feedback from both party workers and the wider public before arriving at conclusions.

He thanked thousands of party workers who campaigned tirelessly, and said the result emerged from a political environment shaped by the combined opposition of the UDF, the BJP, and sections of the media. He added that efforts would be made to counter what he described as misleading propaganda and reconnect with those who may have been influenced by it.

Reiterating acceptance of the verdict, Vijayan said the LDF would correct its shortcomings through democratic processes and strengthen its engagement with the people.

“We will move forward with greater clarity and confidence,” he said, vowing to continue the fight for Kerala’s future, public welfare, democracy, and secularism.
