BJP announces Rs 5,000 monthly allowance for journalists if voted to power in Bengal
Samik Bhattacharya says proposed scheme will cover all accredited journalists, aims to provide financial security for media fraternity; details to be announced later
Kolkata, Apr 18 (PTI) The BJP on Saturday announced that it would introduce a monthly allowance of Rs 5,000 for journalists in West Bengal if it comes to power in the state.
Speaking at a meet-the-press at the Press Club Kolkata, state BJP President Samik Bhattacharya said the benefit would be extended to all accredited journalists.
"There will be no division among journalists, the scheme will be applicable to everyone who meets the eligibility criteria," Bhattacharya stated.
In a lighter vein, he commented, "Whether those who write for us, and those who write against us - everyone is our friend." "We respect your freedom and rights," he said.
Bhattacharya added that the proposed measure is intended to ensure financial help and instil a sense of security for members of the media fraternity, though the quoted amount may not be that high.
Details regarding the rollout of the scheme would be discussed and shared at a later stage, he said.
Elections to the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held in two phases - April 23 and 29. The votes will be counted on May 4. PTI
