Over 23 lakh cured of COVID in India; recovery rate touches 75%


India crossed the 23-lakh mark in the number of recoveries on Sunday (August 23), increasing the recovery rate to 75 per cent. As of 8.30 pm, the country had 30,79,925 confirmed cases, while the death toll increased to 57,258, with as many as 36,489 fresh cases and 412 new deaths. So far, 3.5 crore samples have been tested.

Maharashtra reported 10,441 new coronavirus positive cases, which pushed the cumulative count in the state to 6,82,383,. With the death of 258 patients during the day, the toll reached 22,253. As many as 8,157 patients were discharged after recovery on Sunday, which took the number of recovered persons to 4,88,271.

Tamil Nadu on Sunday recorded 5,975 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall tally to 3,79,385, while 97 fatalities pushed the death toll to 6,517, the Health department said. The number of active cases stood at 53,541 with 6,047 discharges from various healthcare facilities and in total 3,19,327 have recovered.

Coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh crossed the 3.5 lakh mark as 7,895 were added afresh while the state reported 93 more fatalities. The total number of recoveries rose to 2.60 lakh after 7,449 more got cured in 24 hours ending 9 am on Sunday. The number of active cases in the state now stood at 89,742.

Karnataka reported 5,938 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total infection count to 2,77,814, while the toll reached 4,683 with 68 deaths. The day also saw 4,996 people getting discharged. Bengaluru Urban accounted for the maximum numbers of fresh cases reported at 2,126.

Delhi recorded 1,450 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the city’s highest single-day spike in August, taking the tally to over 1.61 lakh while the death toll rose to 4,300, authorities said. The national capital had recorded 1,412 fresh COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the previous highest single-day spike of the month.

With the addition of 1,101 new coronavirus positive cases on Sunday, Gujarat’s COVID count climbed to 86,779, the state health department said. The death toll in the state reached 2,897 as 14 patients succumbed to the infection during the day, it said. As 972 patients were discharged from various hospitals on Sunday.

Madhya Pradesh on Sunday recorded its highest single-day spike of 1,263 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total count to 53,129. The cumulative death toll rose to 1,229 as 23 patients have succumbed to the viral infection. While six deaths occurred in Jabalpur, four patients died in Indore, three each in Bhopal and Gwalior and two in Betul.

Fifty-nine people succumbed to coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday as 5,423 fresh coronavirus cases surfaced, pushing the states infection count to 1,87,781, according to a health bulletin. So far, 2,926 people have died from the disease in the state. Of the new infections, Lucknow reported 712 cases followed by 320 in Kanpur.

Two more patients, including a government employee, died of coronavirus here taking the Jammu divisions death toll to 47, officials said on Sunday. A 53-year-old junior engineer in the Power Development department, hailing from Greater Kailash area of Jammu, breathed his last at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu.
