India's COVID tally crosses 2.6 lakhs; death toll jumps past 50,000


India crossed the 26-lakh mark in COVID-19 cases as the country reported 29,969 fresh cases as of 8.00 pm on Sunday (August 16). The total number of coronavirus cases increased to 26,19,177, while the death toll rose to 50,470 with 385 new fatalities. More than 2.9 crore samples have been tested across the country.

Continuing the downward trend, India’s COVID-19 case fatality rate dropped to 1.93 per cent, which is one of the lowest globally, the Union Health Ministry said. “The USA crossed 50,000 deaths in 23 days, Brazil in 95 days and Mexico in 141 days. India took 156 days to reach this national figure,” the ministry added.

Tamil Nadu reported 5,950 fresh cases, taking the count to 3,38,055, while 125 fatalities pushed the death toll to 5,766. As many as 6,019 people were discharged on Sunday after recovery taking the total number of recoveries to 2,78,270 till date. The number of active cases including those in isolation was 54,019.

Andhra Pradesh’s aggregate number of cases reached 2,89,829, with the addition of 8,012 in the last 24 hours. After a cumulative 28,12,197 sample tests, the infection positivity rate touched 10.02 per cent, the highest so far. The recovery rate touched 68 per cent after 10,117 patients got cured, taking the gross to 2,01,234.

The national capital’s COVID-19 tally rose to 1,52,580 on Sunday with 652 fresh cases, while 1,310 people recuperated from the disease in the last 24 hours pushing the recovery rate in Delhi to more than 90 per cent. The death toll due to the disease has increased to 4,196 with eight more fatalities in the last 24 hours.

The coronavirus recovery rate in Delhi has improved to more than 90 per cent, with 652 new cases and 1,310 recoveries being reported in the last 24 hours. This is the second time in a week that the daily number of deaths has dropped below 10. On August 11, Delhi had recorded eight COVID-19 deaths.

The number of COVID-19 patients who have recovered from the disease crossed the one lakh-mark in Uttar Pradesh even as the state reported 56 more fatalities, pushing the death toll to 2,449. The number of patients who have recovered from the disease now stands at 1,00,432 and the recovery rate is 65.03 per cent.

Gujarat reported 1,094 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, 234 of them in Surat, which took the states tally to 77,663, the health department said. With 19 patients succumbing to COVID-19, the death toll in the state rose to 2,767, it said. The number of recovered patients rose to 60,537 with 1,015 patients getting discharged from hospitals.

Thirteen more people died due to COVID-19 in Rajasthan, taking the state’s toll to 875, while 687 fresh cases pushed its tally to 60,666, a health department official said. Of the latest fatalities, three each were reported from Bikaner and Jaipur, two each from Ajmer, Bhilwara and Sikar, and one from Udaipur.

Odisha’s COVID-19 tally jumped to 60,050 with a record 2,924 new cases, while 10 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 343, a health department official said. Four deaths were reported from Khurda and Ganjam districts and one each from Bhadrak, Bolagir, Cuttack, Jajpur, Kandhamal and Sonepur, the official said.

Jammu and Kashmir recorded 449 new cases of the coronavirus infection, taking the total number of cases reported in the Union Territory to 28,470, while 15 patients died in the last 24 hours. All the 15 deaths were from the Kashmir Valley. With this, the death toll in the Union Territory has risen to 542.
