A major area in Delhi’s Nizamuddin was cordoned off on Monday (March 30) as several people showed COVID-19 symptoms after taking part in a religious gathering there a few days ago. Police said around 200 people had gathered there without requisite permission from the authorities.

“After we learnt that such an event was organised, we served notice to them for violating prohibitory orders and restrictions imposed owing to the lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus,” said a senior police officer.

“Several people have been taken to hospital after they showed symptoms of COVID-19 and are being tested,” the official said.

The Delhi government had earlier this month banned religious, social, cultural and political gatherings as well as protests comprising more than 50 people till March 31 in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

Nationwide restrictions were also imposed on the movement of people for 21 days from March 25 to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. The police have been using drones for surveillance in order to check any violations.

Nizamuddin Markaz spokesperson Dr Mohd Shoaib said they had on March 29 provided a list of names of people to the administration who had any health issue, including cold and fever. “Some of them have been admitted in hospital on basis of age and travel history. We don’t have any confirmed COVID-19 case till now,” he said.
