COVID cases pass 7-lakh mark in country; fatalities over 20,000


As India crossed the one-crore mark in the number of samples tested for COVID-19, the tally of confirmed cases increased to more than 7 lakh on Monday (July 06). The death toll in the country has also crossed the 20,000 mark.

At 9 pm on July 06, the number of COVID-19 infections in India stood at 7,15,190, while the number of fatalities at 20,130. While the country has 2,57,788 active cases, as many as 4,37,189 people have been cured or discharged from hospitals. ICMR said a total of 1,00,04,101 samples have been tested so far.

Maharashtra’s tally rose to 2,11,987, with the addition of 5,368 new cases, while 204 patients succumbed to the infection, increasing the state’s fatality count to 9,206. While 1,15,262 people have recovered, there are 87,681 active cases in the state. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asserted that success against adversities could be achieved only when every section of the society came together.

After recording over 4,000 new infections in the past four days, Tamil Nadu witnessed a slide with 3,827 fresh cases, increasing the state’s tally to 1,14,978. As many as 61 people died of the virus on July 06 and the toll stood at 1,571. It also performed plasma therapy on 18 COVID-19 patients at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai.

Delhi’s COVID-19 tally breached the one-lakh mark as the city recorded 1,379 fresh coronavirus cases, while the death toll mounted to 3,115. Though the national capital had reported its highest single-day spike of 3,947 cases, the number of fresh cases have oscillated in the last few days.

Meanwhile, Gujarat reported the highest single-day spike of 735 new coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 36,858. With the death of 17 more COVID-19 patients, the fatalities rose to 1,962. Amid this, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Monday formed 75 teams to examine coronavirus patients at home under its Home Sanjivani Van initiative.

Madhya Pradesh also recorded the biggest single-day rise of 354 new COVID-19 cases, including 65 from Bhopal, taking the total count to 15,284. With nine more people succumbing to the viral infection, the state’s death toll has mounted to 617.

Actress-turned Lok Sabha member Sumalatha Ambareesh and Congress MLA HD Ranganatha tested positive for COVID-19 in Karnataka. Recently, Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister B Janardhana Poojary had tested positive for the deadly infection.

Meanwhile, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government’s claim of conducting one million COVID-19 tests was a “sham” as test reports were generated without taking samples. Andhra Pradesh is the third state to cross the one-lakh mark in number of tests after Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

With Guwahati witnessing a rapid increase in coronavirus cases, the Assam government will start house-to-house testing in the state capital from Tuesday (July 07), Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said. Guwahati has reported a total of 3,736 COVID-19 cases so far, while 3,293 people tested positive in the last 12 days, since June 24.
