Mumbai’s NSCI Dome concert under scrutiny after attendee dies, woman falls ill

Police are probing the death of a 30-year-old attendee during the concert in Worli, examining CCTV footage, event records and other possible factors behind the incident

A Mumbai resident died and a woman was hospitalised after both fell ill during a live music concert at NSCI Dome in Worli on Saturday night. The event, 'Klangkuenstler Outworld', was an all-night techno show featuring Berlin-based DJ Klangkuenstler, with tickets priced at Rs 4,000 each.

According to reports, Vrishabh Mahendra Gangurde, a Mahim resident, suddenly collapsed while dancing inside the venue, which was heavily crowded at the time. He was rushed to Breach Candy Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

According to ANI, an Accidental Death Report was registered at Tardeo Police Station. His 31-year-old companion was shifted to Jaslok Hospital, where she is reported to be recovering. She told police she had consumed only alcohol and energy drinks.

Cause of death unclear

Reportedly, authorities have stated that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after postmortem and forensic examination reports are received. Preliminary inquiries suggest the deceased may have consumed alcohol before or during the event. A heart attack is being considered as a likely cause, but police are not ruling out other angles.

Police have ruled out a drug angle for now due to lack of evidence, but are examining CCTV footage from the venue and other devices. Investigators are also probing whether a rave party was being held under the cover of a musical event, and whether attendees were asked to cover their phone cameras to conceal evidence.

Organisers, venue under scanner

Police are questioning at least eight people, including the organisers. The venue's ventilation system is being audited by a forensic team, and the organisers' bank accounts are being examined for suspected ticket black-marketing. The role of private bouncers and security personnel is also under scrutiny. Sources told the Free Press Journal that local police had initially refused permission for the event citing safety concerns, but were overruled by senior officials.

Second such incident this year

The tragedy comes weeks after the high-profile drug overdose deaths linked to a music event at Mumbai's NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, in which two MBA students died after allegedly consuming MDMA, leading to multiple arrests and a wider investigation into a suspected drug supply network.
