Gujarat local body voting begins in first polls after delimitation as top leaders vote
PM Modi, HM Amit Shah and CM Patel vote as Gujarat holds massive civic polls under revised OBC quota; over 9,200 seats at stake, counting on April 28
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi cast their votes on Sunday (April 26) as Gujarat voted in local body polls, the first since delimitation and ward restructuring under revised OBC reservation norms.
Under revised norms, the state government raised the quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC) to 27 per cent from the existing 10%. More than 700 seats have declared uncontested winners, most of them from the BJP. The number of uncontested seats is more than three times higher than the previous elections to these bodies held in 2021.

Polling began at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm, as per the schedule announced by the Gujarat State Election Commission.
Top leaders vote in Gujarat
Prime Minister Modi voted through a postal ballot. Sources said the Prime Minister's Office had requested the postal ballot system as, given his busy schedule, he could not visit his home state for Sunday's election.
Shah, accompanied by his wife Sonalben and son Jay Shah, exercised his franchise at the Naranpura sub-zonal office in Ahmedabad. He was greeted with loud cheers by locals upon his arrival outside the polling station.
Chief Minister Patel cast his vote at Shilaj Primary School here and urged people to participate actively in the electoral process. "Everyone should participate in this festival of democracy because voting is both our right as well as responsibility. I appeal to every citizen to exercise their franchise and make all the BJP candidates victorious," Patel told reporters after casting his vote.
Further, in a post on X, the CM appealed to all electors, especially the first-time and young voters, to come forward and vote without fail. "Come, let us fulfil the resolve of 100 per cent voting," he added.
Gujarat Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi and Union minister CR Paatil cast their votes in Surat.
High-stakes civic elections
Nearly 9,200 seats are up for grabs, with more than 4.18 crore voters eligible to exercise their franchise.
The ruling BJP, the Opposition Congress and the AAP have emerged as the key contenders, while the AIMIM is also contesting in several areas. Among prominent candidates in the fray are former Gujarat-cadre IPS officer ML Ninama, ex-radio jockey Abha Desai and former AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani.
