Revanth Reddy’s US visit cancelled: Will Telangana’s investment push take a hit?
Planned meeting with NYC Mayor Mamdani said to have prompted the denial, sparking charges of political discrimination against non-BJP-ruled states
The Centre’s decision to deny Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy permission for his proposed US visit has sparked debate over whether the move was a matter of protocol or a BJP-led political decision. But beyond the speculation lies a more immediate question for the state: could the cancellation affect the state’s efforts to woo US investors?
‘Limited investment impact’
Industry circles, however, believe the impact on investments is likely to be limited. The state’s investment delegation will still travel to the US and continue discussions with potential investors and partners. “Since officials will travel to the US to continue discussions on investments and agreements, the impact of the CM's visit cancellation is likely to be limited,” Sriram Murthy, Industrial Development Committee Chairman, Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI), told The Federal.

Sriram also pointed to the Telangana government’s larger investment plans, including the Global Summit, which is scheduled to be hosted in December.
Revanth Reddy keen to meet Trump?
Revanth was on a multi-nation tour under the TelanganaRising banner. While the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) cleared the United Kingdom leg of his trip, the Ministry has cancelled his US trip. Instead of flying to Boston and New York, he will return to Hyderabad from London.
According to local reports, unverified, the CM had even planned to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House during his US visit. The visit's agenda included bringing investments and international partnerships to the state and signing agreements with top American universities.
Talks with Mamdani on the cards?
The Centre has denied allegations of political motive and cited improper information about the visit as the reason for cancellation. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the proposed details of the US visit were not in proper order, so Revanth Reddy was not permitted to travel. However, some media reports said Revanth planned to meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, prompting the Centre to deny permission.

Revanth had also planned to attract investments in Future City focus areas, including IT, semiconductor and chip manufacturing, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, finance and global education. The state government was also hoping to sign agreements and MoUs with prestigious institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Northeastern University and Virginia Tech during the US visit.
Although the Chief Minister could not travel, the delegation will proceed with the US leg of the trip and continue discussions on the proposed investments and collaborations.
'Move clearly political'
However, retired political science professor, Osmania University, Koorapati Venkata Narayana was far more direct, alleging that Revanth's visit was blocked for political reasons, and that the Centre treats chief ministers of BJP or allied parties differently from those of states not politically aligned with it.
"Revanth has been focused on strengthening ties with the US while working to bring investment into Telangana," he added, drawing a parallel to Chandrababu Naidu's own outreach to Washington — in March 2000, as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, Naidu had invited then US President Bill Clinton to Hyderabad and gained significant political mileage from that visit.
BJP rejects discrimination charge
Rejecting the allegations, Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao said that permission had already been granted for the official team to hold meetings on investments and agreements in the US, and that the decision was purely the result of shortcomings in the rules and procedures related to the visit, and should not be seen politically.
He explained that before approving foreign visits, the Centre examines factors such as the official necessity of the trip, the background of the inviting organisation, the stature of the people to be met, international protocol, diplomatic considerations, security, and FCRA-related aspects.

BJP leaders have pointed to past instances — Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's and Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda's foreign visits during UPA rule, the 2019 Arvind Kejriwal case, and Congress leaders' past opposition to a US visa for Narendra Modi — to argue that denying Revanth Reddy's travel cannot be called political discrimination.
Telugu connection with the US
Beyond the investment push, Reddy’s proposed visit was also viewed through the lens of Telangana’s Telugu connection with the US. The state government viewed US Vice-President J D Vance’s wife, Usha Vance, who has Telugu roots, as a favourable factor.
