Why TN move to appoint Vijay film producer Venkata Narayana has sparked row
The TVK govt has come under Opposition fire after appointing 'Jana Nayagan' producer K Venkata Narayana as Tamil Nadu's Special Representative in New Delhi.
The Tamil Nadu government has landed in yet another appointment controversy by naming K Venkata Narayana as the state's Special Representative in New Delhi. The move comes barely a month after the government revoked the appointment of astrologer Rickey Radhan Pandit as Officer on Special Duty (Political) following widespread criticism.
The appointment has drawn attention because Venkata Narayana is the producer of Chief Minister Vijay's upcoming film Jana Nayagan and is also known to share close ties with Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
The appointment comes at a time when Tamil Nadu and Karnataka remain at odds over the proposed Mekedatu project, adding another dimension to the controversy.
Opposition attacks
The BJP was among the first to criticise the decision. Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran questioned why the producer of Vijay's film had been chosen to represent the state in New Delhi while also pointing to his reported proximity to DK Shivakumar.
Condemning the appointment, Nagendran said, "At a time when the Mekedatu issue and other problems exist, a Kannadiga, who is also the producer of the film Jana Nayagan, has been appointed. If someone like him is appointed, how can we solve issues like Mekedatu?"
The criticism did not stop with the BJP. Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief Seeman also questioned whether such an important post should be given to someone closely associated with the chief minister of a neighbouring state. AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran also criticised the appointment, alleging that the government had overlooked experienced administrators in favour of a personal associate.
Fresh appointment row
The controversy has gained further attention because it follows another appointment that the government was forced to withdraw.
Earlier, the government had appointed astrologer Rickey Radhan Pandit as Officer on Special Duty to the chief minister. The decision triggered criticism from political parties as well as on social media, prompting the government to revoke the order within days.
The appointment of Venkata Narayana has now once again placed the government under political scrutiny.
Government stand
While the government has not officially responded to the criticism, opposition parties argue that key public appointments should be based on administrative merit rather than personal or professional proximity to the chief minister.
Supporters of the government, however, contend that the post of Special Representative is a political appointment and that governments are free to nominate individuals they trust to represent the state's interests before the Union government.
The focus is now on whether the Vijay government will stand by its decision or, like the earlier Rickey Radhan Pandit appointment, reconsider it amid mounting political pressure.
