Thrissur ATM heist: Suspect shot dead in encounter with Tamil Nadu police

Tamil Nadu police nabbed a gang suspected to be behind ATM heist in Thrissur, Kerala


The Tamil Nadu police shot dead a man who is suspected to be behind the daring Thrissur ATM heist, where robbers took away Rs 60 lakh. The robberies took place between 4 am and 5 am on Friday (September 27) in Kerala's Thrissur.

The suspects made a daring attempt to escape, recklessly crashing into cars and two-wheelers at Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district on Friday, before being cornered.

While one of the suspects died after being gunned down by the police, another person who sustained injuries has been admitted to a government hospital. Two policemen, including an inspector, who were said to have been injured when the gang reportedly attacked them, have also been admitted to the government hospital.

"They (the gang) necessitated a situation forcing the police to open fire. Two of our men have been injured in the attack," Salem range DIG E S Uma told reporters.

Namakkal district superintendent of police, Rajesh Khanna, said two policemen were injured when the gang attempted to flee after attacking the police.

Earlier, the police, on a hot chase of the container truck, initially warned the driver to stop the vehicle. But when he refused to heed, additional forces were rushed and the truck was finally intercepted.

"The police had to open fire at a person who attempted to flee from the truck and nabbed him. Six others were also detained," an official said.

A car concealed inside the truck was also seized.
