IMD issues orange alert in six Kerala districts amid heavy rain
The weather agency has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala until June 15, with thunderstorms and strong surface winds adding to the threat
Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 11 (PTI) As heavy rains lashed parts of Kerala, the IMD on Thursday issued an orange alert in four districts of the state for the day.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur districts for the day and a yellow alert in seven other districts.
It also issued an orange alert in Wayanad and Kasaragod districts for three hours from 4 pm on Thursday.
An orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm in a day, while a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.
The IMD also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state till June 15.
In the morning, the IMD issued a forecast for moderate to heavy rainfall in several parts of Kerala during the day.
The weather agency also forecast thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and surface winds of speeds between 40-50 kilometres per hour in several other districts. PTI
