
Kerala reports 3 more communicable disease deaths; Shigella cases at 59
A total of 11,534 confirmed fever cases were reported across Kerala on Saturday. The state also recorded 85 confirmed dengue cases and 208 suspected cases
Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 13 (PTI) The Kerala health department on Saturday confirmed three more deaths due to communicable diseases reported in June, officials said.
According to data released by the Directorate of Health Services, the death of a 10-year-old boy in Kalpetta, Wayanad, on June 8 was confirmed as fever-related.
The death of a 59-year-old woman in Ottapalam, Palakkad, on June 11 was confirmed to have been caused by amoebic meningoencephalitis, commonly known as brain fever.
The death of an 85-year-old woman in Perumbavoor, Ernakulam, on June 9 was confirmed to have been caused by influenza.
A total of 11,534 confirmed fever cases were reported across Kerala on Saturday.
The state also recorded 85 confirmed dengue cases and 208 suspected cases.
There was some respite on the Shigella front, with only three confirmed cases reported on Saturday, from Pozhikkara in Kollam, Thrissur city, and Panakkad in Malappuram.
With this, the total number of confirmed Shigella cases reported in June rose to 59, while 15 more people were suspected to have contracted the infection.
Two confirmed deaths due to Shigella have also been reported this month.
The DHS data also showed eight confirmed cases of leptospirosis, 24 cases of Hepatitis A, seven cases of mumps, 86 cases of chickenpox, 79 cases of influenza, and two cases of scrub typhus in the state on Saturday.
Officials said measures to prevent the spread of Shigella had been intensified, and the number of daily cases was expected to decline in the coming days.
With the onset of the monsoon season, the spread of communicable diseases has increased across the state, prompting the health department to implement multiple preventive measures. PTI
