Yash’s film 'Toxic' runs into controversy; minister accuses unit of illegally cutting trees

Karnataka's environment minister accused 'Toxic's production team of illegally cutting down 100 trees to construct the film set. The production house denies any wrongdoing

Kannada actor Yash's highly anticipated action thriller Toxic, which is directed by Malayalam actor-turned-director Geethu Mohandas, has run into a major controversy.

The film, which is slated to release in April 10, 2025, is facing trouble over allegations that the production team illegally cut down 100 trees in Bengaluru's Peenya to construct the film set.

Minister expresses concerns

Karnataka environment minister Eshwar Khandre expressed his concerns in a letter to the additional chief secretary, stating, "This is a serious violation. Hundreds of trees have been removed without permission, and we are seeking strict legal action."

He further claimed that 599 acres of forest land had been unlawfully transferred to Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) in the 1960s without proper de-notification and accused HMT of illegally leasing forest land to various entities, including to film production companies.

Khandre pointed out that in the case of Toxic, a massive set was built on land allegedly sold to Canara Bank, resulting in extensive tree removal. He called for a thorough investigation and promised strict measures against those involved.

KVN Productions denies wrongdoing

In response to the allegations, KVN Productions, the production house behind Toxic, denied any wrongdoing. They claimed that the site is a private property and that they had complied with all legal requirements.

"We conducted a comprehensive survey in February 2024 and have submitted the necessary documents. We await the forest department’s report and will contest these claims if needed," the production house said.

Toxic, which is directed by Malayalam filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, will be KGF star Yash's 19th film.
