Karnataka government issues urgent health warning after banned cancer-causing artificial colours discovered in cakes
The Karnataka government, after discovering cancer-causing ingredients in 12 cake samples, has reportedly issued a stern warning about the health risks linked to the popular dessert.
This advisory follows Karnataka's earlier ban on artificial food colours, such as Rhodamine-B, in cotton candy and Gobi Manchurian over health concerns.
Carcinogenic substances
The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department reported finding carcinogenic substances in 12 cake samples from Bengaluru bakeries. Out of 235 samples tested, 223 were deemed safe, while 12 contained harmful levels of artificial colouring.
The department warned that cakes such as red velvet and black forest, often made with these bright artificial colours, pose serious health risks.
Risk from artificial colours
Bakeries have now been instructed to meet safety standards and avoid using artificial colours like Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine.
The department noted that excessive use of these colours not only raises cancer risks but can also damage mental and physical health.
