Karnataka Cong legislature party meeting on Saturday, new leader set to be elected

Following Chief Minister's resignation, all legislators have been ordered to attend Vidhana Soudha meeting to elect a new leader and initiate cabinet transition

Bengaluru, May 29 (PTI) The Karnataka Congress legislature party meeting has been called for May 30 and a new leader is set to be elected, party sources said on Friday.

According to a letter sent by the legislature party secretary Allamprabhu Patil to all legislators, the meeting will be held here on Saturday at 4 PM at the conference hall in Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the state legislature and secretariat.

The development follows Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Friday accepting Siddaramaiah's resignation as chief minister and dissolving the Council of Ministers headed by him.

D K Shivakumar, who served as deputy chief minister under Siddaramaiah, is widely expected to be elected as the new leader of the Congress legislature party.

"The meeting will be chaired by Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Congress Legislature Party. The meeting will also be attended by D K Shivakumar, KPCC President, Randeep Singh Surjewala, AICC General Secretary and Karnataka State in-charge; N S Boseraju, Leader of the House in the Legislative Council; and all working presidents of the party," the letter said.

The letter makes it clear that it is mandatory for the legislators to take part in the legislature party meeting.

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are in Delhi to meet the top Congress leaders to discuss the transition of power, and formation of the new cabinet.

On Thursday, at a breakfast hosted at his residence for cabinet colleagues, Siddaramaiah informed the ministers of his decision to step down and later resigned. PTI
