Eight kabaddi players beat Punjab police constable to death in Barnala

Constable Darshan Singh intervened when a scuffle broke out between the players and the staff members of the restaurant over settling the bill


In a shocking incident, eight kabaddi players on Sunday (October 22) allegedly beat to death policeman Darshan Singh in Punjab’s Barnala, when the policeman intervened in a scuffle involving the kabaddi players and the staff of a restaurant they were dining at.

The tragic incident took place on Sunday (October 22) evening at the 22-Acre Market in Barnala after a scuffle broke out between the players and the restaurant staff over the bill, according to a media report. The players were drinking at the restaurant, and the staff called the city police station for help after a dispute arose over the bill. Singh, who came along with two other colleagues from Punjab Police, was mercilessly beaten up by the players.

“The kabaddi players thrashed Darshan Singh when he intervened to resolve the matter. He fell unconscious and was rushed to the civil hospital, where he died during treatment,” the report quoted Inspector Baljeet Singh Dhillon as saying. All the players involved in the beating fled the scene after Singh fell unconscious.

Of the eight players, four have been arrested by the Punjab police and a manhunt has been launched to nab the rest, according to the report. The arrested players have been identified as Parmjeet Singh of Thikriwala, Jugraj Singh of Raisar, Baljeet Singh of Amla Singhwala and Gurmeet Singh of Cheema village.

The police have registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC against the players.
