Four miscreants in a car reportedly opened fire at Gurpreet Singh Gopi after chasing him; police suspect election-related animosity the reason
AAP leader Gurpreet Singh Gopi was allegedly shot dead by armed assailants while he was on the road on his motorcycle in Mamdot town in Punjab, reports said, quoting Punjab police.
Multiple news outlets, including NDTV and Economic Times, said that four car-borne miscreants chased Gopi and opened fire at him at the main bazar of Mamdot on Saturday (August 29) evening. While Gopi was accompanied by a man identified as Harpreet, some of their friends were also following them in a separate car. The attackers reportedly fired at the car too.
Poll-related animosity the reason: police
The injured persons were rushed to the Civil Hospital, where Gopi was declared dead.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Bhupinder Singh Sidhu, told NDTV that an election-related dispute is the likely angle behind the attack.
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the murder and tying together the sequence of events.
Sidhu told NDTV that the attackers have been identified, police teams have been formed and arrests will follow.
