‘Hema Malini was made to dance’: MP minister Narottam Mishra stirs controversy again

His statement at a public event has gone viral on social media, and has attracted criticism from his political opponents for insulting women

BJP leader Narottam Mishra is in the news again, for the wrong reason.

The home minister of Madhya Pradesh has courted a fresh controversy by making a ‘derogatory’ reference to his own party’s MP and actor Hema Malini.

Speaking at a public event in Datia, Mishra said he had brought "development at such a level in Datia that not only cultural programs were organised, but even Hema Malini was made to dance," according to a report by India Today.

This statement of Mishra has gone viral on social media and has attracted criticism from his political opponents for insulting women.

Janata Dal (United) reacted strongly with this post on X: “See the reality of shameless BJP members who criticise the character and appearance. Madhya Pradesh's Home Minister Narottam Mishra has said such derogatory things about his own party's MP Hema Malini."

This is not the first time that Mishra has made controversial statements. Last year, he objected to the colour of the attire (green and saffron) used by Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the song Besharam Rang in the movie Pathaan. He said they needed to be rectified, along with the song’s lyrics and the film’s title.

Before that, he had warned the makers of another Bollywood movie Adipurush of legal action if certain scenes showing Hindu religious figures in a “wrong” way were not deleted. The film was based on the epic Ramayana.

In yet another instance last year, he had told the authorities to file an FIR against filmmaker Leena Manimekalai over a controversial poster for her documentary Kaali.

Politicians also have been at the receiving end of his acerbic tongue. He had called Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra” as “Congress Chodo Yatra” (Quit Congress Yatra).

Mishra is contesting from Datia for the fourth time in the upcoming assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh. He has won from this constituency in the previous three assembly elections.
