The former chief minister won both the Ganderbal and Budgam seats, defeating his nearest rivals from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by over 10,000 and 18,000 votes respectively
National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah on Tuesday (October 8) said many attempts were made to destroy his party in the last five years by creating new outfits that have been routed in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election.
The former chief minister won both the Ganderbal and Budgam seats, defeating his nearest rivals from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by over 10,000 and 18,000 votes respectively.

Omar’s victory comments
"There were attempts to destroy the NC over the last five years. So many parties were created here, whose only aim was to destroy the NC,” Abdullah said after accepting his winning certificate at the Budgam constituency.
“But God's grace has been on us, and those who tried to destroy us have been decimated in the process," he added.

The former chief minister thanked the voters in Budgam for electing him, “giving me an opportunity to serve the people of J-K once again".
Omar outlines challenges
Abdullah said the verdict – which saw the NC and Congress notch up a majority in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly – had increased the party's responsibilities.
"It is our duty now to come up to the expectations of the people through our work and that is what our endeavour would be for the next five years," he added.
NC-Congress to form government
He thanked PDP president Mehbooba Mufti after she congratulated the NC for its spectacular win.
The NC-Congress alliance is set to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir as they have got a simple majority in the 90-seat Assembly, winning in 47 constituencies (NC 41, Congress 6) and leading in one as the counting of votes is underway.
