Bitter cold wave hits Kashmir, Srinagar weather below freezing point

Shopian was the coldest place in the Valley, with the mercury at minus 3.8 degrees Celsius; Pahalgam in south Kashmir came next at minus 2.6 degrees Celsius



A bitter cold wave accompanied by an early morning fog enveloped Kashmir on Monday as the minimum temperature in the Valley dropped below freezing point at many places including Srinagar overnight.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, was minus 0.8 degrees Celsius, 1.2 degrees below normal temperature for now, the Indian Meteorological Department said.

The maximum temperature also fell to a high of 12.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Shopian was the coldest place in the Valley, with the mercury settling at minus 3.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday night. Pahalgam in south Kashmir came next at minus 2.6 degrees Celsius.

Bandipora in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius while Gulmarg’s temperature was minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar city was covered by a dense fog early on Monday morning, posing difficulty to motorists.

The weather is expected to remain dry across the Kashmir Valley over the next 48 hours.
