Watch | Jantar Mantar protest: Marchers allege Delhi police brutality after detention
Protesters allege police brutality, denial of medical care and overnight detention after a peaceful march from Ramlila Maidan. What happened behind the scenes?
While lakhs of people gathered at Delhiās Ramlila Maidan for a protest on Sunday (November 1), a smaller group marched towards Jantar Mantar with a different demand: to reclaim the historic protest site. The march was stopped at Minto Road, and participants alleged that they were detained and subjected to police brutality.
The protesters said they had planned the march in coordination with various organisations from the morning. Their intention was to leave Ramlila Maidan after the rally and proceed peacefully towards Jantar Mantar, which Delhi Police has de-notified as a designated protest venue.
According to the protesters, they offered to proceed in a single line if the police allowed them to move forward. However, they alleged that the police refused and began detaining participants almost immediately. What went wrong?
