Delhi Kalkaji gang-rape survivor says accused posed as policemen: Report

The survivor in the alleged recent gang rape in Delhi’s Kalkaji area has reportedly revealed in her statement to the police that the three accused claimed to be policemen when they first approached her, adding that they intimidated her and her friend with a gun and knives before separating her from her friend and taking turns in sexually assaulting her.

According to an India Today report, on September 21, the day of the incident, the survivor went to the Kalkaji temple with her friend and had planned to visit the ISKON temple later in the day.

The statement further revealed that she set out from home at around 5 pm and informed her sister about it. She reached the temple where she met her friend at around 5.45 pm. Then they offered prayers and went to the Astha Kunj Park.

Acccused claim to be policemen

“I also wanted to visit the ISKCON temple. I told my friend that we should first sit in the park for some time, eat chips and then go for darshan,” she said as quoted in the report.

According to her statement, when she and her friend just sat on a bench, three men, aged between 30 and 35 years, confronted them and asked them what they were doing there.

“They immediately caught hold of my friend and slapped him. When we asked who they were, they said, 'We are policemen. Why have you come here at this time? Entry is not allowed here'," the victim revealed in the statement.

The survivor said the three men first took away her and her friend’s mobile phones before separating them. She said she was frightened and asked them to contact her parents instead.

Survivor describes threats with gun

“I was very scared. I told them, ‘Sir, ask whatever you want to ask here. Talk to my mother,’” she said.

According to her statement, one of the men then called out to Asif and asked him to take out a gun. She said Asif, who wore a purple shirt and was the healthiest of the three, pulled a black gun from his jeans pocket before putting it away. The men then took out knives.

She alleged that the men took her to a darker, secluded section of the park, where they took turns raping her while threatening her with a knife.

“I was crying. I was in pain,” she said.

Accused warn them to stay silent

Afterwards, the men returned some clothes, reunited her with her friend and gave back their phones. They allegedly warned them to leave and remain silent.

“They said, ‘Leave this place quickly, otherwise we will kill you. And don’t tell anyone anything,’” she told police.

The pair left immediately. The friend then called police after she told him about the alleged gangrape.

Asif, Hemant and Mukesh were arrested on Tuesday (September 22). Asif was arrested after an exchange of fire near Lady Shri Ram College for Women. He suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. The three knew each other and lived and worked near the park.
