AAP call for Maliwal’s resignation after her unsavoury remarks on Atishi
AAP accuses Swati Maliwal of aligning with the BJP and fuelling controversy with her remarks about Atishi, who is set to be the new chief minister of Delhi
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has called for the resignation of its Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal following her controversial comments about senior leader Atishi, who has been announced as the next chief minister of Delhi.
AAP leader Dilip Pandey slammed Maliwal on Tuesday (September 17) for allegedly aligning with the BJP despite being appointed to the Rajya Sabha by the AAP.
'Following BJP's narrative'
"Swati Maliwal accepted a Rajya Sabha seat from AAP but seems to be following the BJP’s narrative. If she has any integrity left, she should resign and pursue a Rajya Sabha seat through the BJP," Pandey said.
This demand for Maliwal's resignation comes amid growing tensions between her and the party, which intensified after her accusation that Arvind Kejriwal’s aide, Bibhav Kumar, assaulted her at the chief minister's residence.
The AAP announced on Tuesday morning that Atishi would succeed Arvind Kejriwal as the chief minister of Delhi, following Kejriwal's decision to step down until the upcoming elections.
'Sad day'
Maliwal's response was critical, calling it a "sad day" for Delhi.
She claimed that Atishi's parents had tried to prevent the execution of terrorist Afzal Guru, stating in an online post, "Today, a woman whose family fought to save Afzal Guru from the death penalty is becoming Delhi’s Chief Minister. They petitioned the President for mercy for him."
Maliwal went further, labelling Atishi as a "dummy CM" and accusing her parents of being part of a political conspiracy and expressing concerns about the security of the country.
