PM Modi more concerned about Israel than Manipur, says Rahul Gandhi
It is amazing the PM (is) so interested in what is happening in Israel but not interested at all in what is happening in Manipur, he said
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday (October 16) slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the PM is more concerned about the Israel-Hamas War than Manipur, where violence since May has left 180 people dead.
Addressing a campaign rally near Raj Bhavan in Aizawl after a two-km padayatra through the city, Rahul said, “It is amazing to me that the PM and the government of India are so interested in what is happening in Israel (Israel-Hamas conflict) but not interested at all in what is happening in Manipur, where people have been murdered, women molested and babies killed.” He said it was “something to be ashamed of” that PM Modi has not yet visited Manipur ever since violence between the two communities first broke out in May.
At the start of a two-day visit to Mizoram, which will see assembly elections next month, Rahul said that Manipur was no longer a unified single state but had been divided into two states on ethnic lines. The Congress leader further said the violence in Manipur is just “a symptom of the problem”.
“The idea of India that respects each other, is tolerant, learns from other ideas, religions and languages and that loves itself as a whole... That is the idea of India which is under attack by the BJP,” he said. “They (BJP) attack different communities, religions and languages. They spread hatred and violence in the country. They spread arrogance, lack of understanding and this is completely against the idea of India,” he added.
The election for the 40-member Mizoram Assembly is scheduled to be held on November 7
Meanwhile, on his way to Mizoram, Rahul met Congress leaders in Tripura at the airport lounge in Agartala. The meeting took place after Rahul reached Agartala by a chartered flight from Delhi. He then left for Aizawl.
Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Sudip Roy Barman told the media: "Rahulji had a brief meeting with party leaders and wanted to know the condition of people in Tripura.”
