Central team tours north Sikkim worst hit by flash floods

The central team will assess the widespread damage and destruction caused by flash floods in the worst-affected region of Mangan district in north Sikkim


A Central government team on Tuesday (October 10) left for north Sikkim to assess the widespread damage and destruction caused by flash floods in the worst-affected region.

The delegation is led by Anant Kishore Saran, joint secretary in the home ministry, an official said. The others in the team include RK Meena, director in power ministry, Sashwat Rai, executive engineer in the Jal Shakti ministry, and SSDMA director Prabhakar Rai.

The officials flew by helicopter from the state capital Gangtok to North Sikkim, an official said. Mangan in north Sikkim is the most seriously flood-hit district with over 30,000 people affected.

Members of the central team on Monday visited the affected areas in Gangtok. They assessed the damage caused to buildings, power lines, roads and bridges.

Financial help

The central team visited a relief camp on Monday in Majigaon and made certain recommendations regarding proper sanitation at the rescue centres. On financial assistance, they said priority will be given to immediate and short-term requirements of Sikkim. The funds will be released speedily so that normalcy is restored at the earliest.

The flash floods which ravaged Sikkim have claimed at least 70 lives. A search is on for 80 people who are still missing.
