Rallies continue in Kolkata demanding justice for RG Kar hospital victim
Retired Army officers, former students of Calcutta Girls’ High School, and nurses hold rallies across city
A day after Mamata Banerjee’s peace overture to the protesting junior doctors fell through and the doctors returned from the chief minister’s Kalighat residence without holding talks over their unmet demand for livestreaming the proceedings, rallies continued in Kolkata demanding justice for the postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
Rallies across city
Retired Army officers, who were alumni of the Purulia Sainik School, marched from Jadavpur 8B Bus Stand to Golpark in south Kolkata with placards in their hands amid rains.
In Wellington in the central part of the city, former students of Calcutta Girls’ High School marched in a rally. Hundreds of nurses also held a rally at Karunamoyee in Salt Lake, seeking safety at the workplace.
The post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty last month, triggering a nationwide outrage. Even though the protests have died down in other parts of the country, they have raged on across West Bengal, mostly in Kolkata.
CBI’s breakthrough
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been probing the case for a month now, and made two fresh arrests in the case on Saturday (September 14) night. So far, the only person arrested in the case was Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, who was nabbed by Kolkata Police right after the crime.
On Saturday, CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college who has also been accused of financial malpractices at the hospital. He has been accused of destroying evidence after the crime. The other person to be arrested is the OC of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, who has also been accused of destroying evidence, compromising the crime scene, and delaying the filing of the FIR, for which the Supreme Court has also rapped Kolkata Police.
