Jharkhand polls: BJP fields Hembrom against CM Hemant Soren

Hemant Soren was elected from both Dumka and Barahit (ST) (Sahibganj district) in 2019 but retained the latter seat where he won by over 25,000 votes


The BJP on Monday (October 28) named Gamliyel Hembrom as its nominee from Barhait Assembly seat against Jharkhand chief minister and JMM leader Hemant Soren.

Hembrom figures in the second list issued by the Bharatiya Janata Party for the November Assembly elections.

Hemant Soren was elected from both Dumka and Barahit (ST) (Sahibganj district) in 2019 but retained the latter seat where he won by over 25,000 votes over his nearest rival, the BJP’s Simon Malto.

Hembrom lost badly in 2019

Hembrom also contested from Barhait in 2019 on AJSU ticket and polled 2,573 votes, finishing fourth in the contest.

The BJP also named Vikash Mahto as its candidate from Tundi seat.

The BJP on October 19 released its first list of 66 candidates for the elections. It is contesting 68 of the 81 seats in the state, leaving the rest for its allies.

INDIA versus NDA

The JMM has announced candidates for 43 of the 81 seats. Of the 43 seats the JMM had contested in the 2019 elections, it won 30 and came second in five constituencies.

Elections to the 81-member House will take place on November 13 and 20. Counting is scheduled on November 23.

INDIA bloc partners will contest the polls together, with the Congress and JMM competing for 70 of the 81 seats respectively. The remaining 11 seats will be contested by the RJD and Left parties.

BJP lost in 2019

In the Opposition camp, the BJP will contest 68 seats, the AJSU 10, the JD(U) two and the LJP (Ram Vilas) one.

In 2019, the JMM-led alliance won 47 seats, wresting power from the BJP. The BJP secured 25 seats, the JVM-P three, the AJSU two while the CPI (ML) and NCP bagged one seat each. Two Independents too were elected.
