Singer Chinmayi alleges loan apps harass borrowers with deepfake pics

Chinmayi said deepfake is the “next weapon to extort, blackmail, and rape women,” and called for legal action against the perpetrators of such crimes

Amid concerns over the damage deepfake videos can do to celebrities, the latest victim being actor Rashmika Mandanna, singer Chinmayi Sripaada has alleged that deepfake videos are being used not just to harass celebrities but also common people.

Chinmayi’s post on X comes after a shocking deepfake video of Rashmika went viral and created a furore over the dangers of artificial intelligence being used by people with criminal intentions.

Chinmayi said AI technology is being misused by loan apps collectors who harass women borrowers by morphing their images over “porn photos” in order to extort money. She said this is the “next weapon to extort, blackmail, and rape women,” and called for legal action against the perpetrators of such crimes.

“Deep Fake is going to be the next weapon they use to target and harass and blackmail girls to extort, blackmail and rape. Their clueless families in one small village or town is not going to understand when the honour is at stake,” she said in her post on X.

The singer hoped that there would be a countrywide awareness campaign to educate people about the dangers that deep fakes posed for girls, and the importance of reporting such incidents to the authorities.

The video of Rashmika that went viral this week showed her entering an elevator in a low-cut dress. It was actually a video of a British-Indian influencer called Zara Patel, whose face was replaced with that of Rashmika’s.

The actress called the deep fake video “extremely scary” and expressed deep hurt at such a video being spread online.

The central government took notice of the disturbing incident and sent an advisory to social media platforms.
